How Port Royal Makes our Gear

How Port Royal Makes our Gear

At Port Royal, we set out to build gear we’re actually stoked to use — the kind of stuff we’d pack for a dawn patrol session, a quick mission to Costa Rica, or a long day chasing fish offshore. But from the start, we knew we didn’t want to make “more stuff for the sake of stuff.” That’s why a huge part of our initial lineup is made-to-order.

It’s not the cheapest way. It’s not the fastest way.
But it’s the right way — for the ocean, for the planet, and for a small Florida-owned brand trying to do things with intention instead of excess.

Why We Chose Made-to-Order

When you order a Port Royal tee, hoodie, or tank, it isn’t pulled from a warehouse filled with hundreds of pieces waiting to be sold. It’s printed one at a time, made specifically for you. That decision wasn’t accidental — it was strategic.

1. Zero Overproduction

Most clothing brands overproduce wildly — guessing what will sell, and tossing whatever doesn’t. That leftover inventory often ends up discounted, destroyed, or dumped.
We want no part of that.

Made-to-order means we only produce what people actually want. No giant piles of unsold gear. No unnecessary waste. No landfill full of shirts that never got worn.

2. Better Quality Control

When every item is made individually, there’s no rushed mass-production.
Your graphic is printed fresh and every piece gets a little more attention — and it shows.

3. More Room for Creativity

Because we’re not locked into massive inventory runs, we can release more designs, experiment more, and have way more fun with the brand.
Want a pirate riding a hammerhead? Boom.
Want a tattoo inspired tee? Let’s go.
Want small-batch collections tied to surf trips or Florida roots? Easy.

Made-to-order lets us build Port Royal the way it was meant to feel: playful, gritty, flexible, and full of stories.

Why Made-to-Order Isn’t “Cheap” (And Why That’s Okay)

People sometimes wonder why made-to-order gear isn’t priced like bargain-bin fast fashion. The truth? We don’t want to make disposable clothing.

When your gear is created one piece at a time, the cost of production is higher — but the value is higher too. Here’s why:

1. Higher Printing Standards

Small-batch DTG or sublimation printing costs more per unit than mass-produced screen printing.
You’re getting crisp detail, bold color, and a print that lasts.

2. No Bulk Discounts or Warehouse Savings

Most big brands order thousands of units to slash costs. We intentionally don’t. Because we’re making gear responsibly — not recklessly.

3. The Value of Something Made For You

There’s something rad about knowing your shirt didn’t exist until you hit “buy.”
It wasn’t sitting around waiting for an owner.
It was created because you wanted it.

That’s not cheap — that’s personal.

The Future: Mixing Small-Batch Product Runs + In-House Designs

As Port Royal grows, we’re expanding into products you can’t make on-demand — traction pads, performance boardshorts, technical gear, and accessories. These will come from small production runs with trusted manufacturers who share our values for durability, craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility.

We’ll always keep some made-to-order gear because it lets us stay nimble, creative, and waste-free. But we’re also building out the product line into the stuff we use every single day on the water.

Why This Matters to Us

We’re not a giant corporate surf company pumping out tens of thousands of units.
We’re a small crew of lifelong watermen/women— who decided to build gear we’re proud of.

Responsible production matters to us because the ocean has given us everything: adventure, community, identity, and a lifetime of stories.

The least we can do is build a brand that respects it.

Thank You for Supporting a Small Florida Brand With Big Intentions

When you buy from Port Royal, you’re not just grabbing another tee. You’re supporting:

  • A small, Florida-owned company

  • Better quality gear

  • A team of ocean-obsessed humans

  • A brand built on stories, not shortcuts

Each order keeps us creating — and each piece is made just for you.

Drown Ordinary.
Stay stoked.
